How long do Hair Extensions Really Last?

Crowns at Garnish in Raleigh, North CarolinaAs hair extension stylists, we hear the question “how long will my hair extensions last?” ALL the time. The truth? It really depends on a couple factors. The type of installation method, the current state of your hair, and how you maintain your hair at home are just a few of the factors that play into “how long” your hair extensions will last. In this blog post we will go over each factor and why it’s important to understand each in order to know how long your hair extensions will last. It’s also important to remember that not all hairstylists or salons have the same exact method and/or maintenance process. When choosing a salon to get your hair extensions done at, it’s important to do your research on the salon and make sure you’re going to someone certified in the methods they offer. This will prevent any damage that could happen when getting your hair extensions done. At Garnish, we are an extension exclusive salon with all of our stylists certified and thoroughly trained in the methods we offer promising a safe and thorough installation and maintenance process.

Extension Types

There are tons of hair extension methods out there to choose from. The method plays a huge role in how long your hair extensions will last. Let’s go over a couple of hair extensions methods that are offered by hair stylists and salons.

  • Tape Ins: This method is a popular one in the industry right now and has been around since 1955. This method is applied by using pre taped wefts to sandwich your hair in between. If applied correctly they can last 4-12 weeks and the wefts can be reused 3-4 times. Because of the medical grade taped used, you are able to wash and style your hair with this extension method. If you’re thinking about this method make sure you’re seeing a hair stylist that is certified in tape in application. This will prevent any damage or breakage to your natural hair.
  • NBR: The NBR method is one we offer to the majority of our guests here at Garnish. We as stylists love this method for several reasons. It allows us to use hand tied hair extensions that can be easily customized to each guest. From color, texture, length, and volume we can ensure that each client is getting exactly what they’re looking for. Your hair extensions can last up to 10 months, with regular maintenance appointments, before needing new wefts. We’ve found that this method provides the most seamless look making sure your extensions are undetectable.
  • K-Tips: K Tips aka Keratin bonds is another popular hair extension method . It’s considered a semi-permanent method using individual strands of hair and attaching them to your natural hair at the root using keratin based adhesive. K tips are considered a semi-permeant method, lasting 4-6 months. Many people like this method because of its longevity and versatile styling options. This method should only be installed by stylists certified in applying this extension method to prevent any damage to your natural hair.
  • Crowns: Crowns are a type of extension method used for guests who are experiencing hair loss. Most people think of a wig when they hear the word “crown” but we want to debunk the myth that Crowns, if installed correctly, look anything like a wig. This is one of the most customized hair extension methods because it is being installed and attached toward the crown area of your head. Sizing, color, cut and more are all customized to match the guests specific needs and coverage. This ensures that the crown looks natural and takes away that wiggy topper look and feel. This method takes months to years to become certified in and requires extensive training. It’s important to go to a stylist who has been trained correctly and certified in offering this method.

What method do we offer?

At Garnish, we offer NBR to guests who are looking to add length and volume and Crowns to guests who are experiencing hair loss. We prefer these methods over any other because of their ability to be customized. We wanted to be able to offer guests exactly what they’re looking for or better and the NBR method and Crowns have been life changing for both us as stylists and our guests. Being able to impact women’s lives daily with the art of hair extensions is…

Maintenance

Maintenance, another factor you want to take into consideration when thinking about how long your hair extensions will last. At home maintenance is crucial for the longevity of your hair extensions and it’s something we make sure each guest knows how to do when leaving their first appointment with us. Sleeping with a silk pillowcase and/or bonnet, brushing thoroughly morning and night, scheduling maintenance appointments in advance and using high quality products are just a few maintenance tips everyone who has hair extensions should be doing. Your hair extensions can last up to 10 months before needing new hair if taken care of correctly by both you and your hair stylist.
