If you’ve followed us for any length of time you already know—hair extensions are our passion. If you’ve only known hair extensions as a fashion trend to make your hair longer, it might seem weird how obsessed we are, but we know the real secret of hair extensions—they change women’s lives.
Hair loss, hair thinning, and even the hair you were born with being thin or fine can cause so much frustration and pain. More than half of all women will experience hair thinning or loss at some point in their lives, whether from a disorder or disease, for hormonal reasons, postpartum hair loss, or aging. Women often identify with our hair; it’s an integral part of our identity, and when we look in the mirror and don’t love what we see, it can be devastating.
Hair extensions provide an incredible solution for many different hair challenges. We’ve seen firsthand how having the hair of your dreams can completely change your self-esteem and even your outlook on life. Because this subject is so near to our hearts, we wanted to talk about an incredibly important topic that isn’t discussed nearly enough in our industry—discrimination based on hair.
Did you know it’s currently LEGAL in all but seven states to discriminate against someone in the school or workplace based on their hairstyle? The Crown Act, led by the CROWN Coalition and Dove, is petitioning for laws to protect Women of Color from discrimination based on their hair.
According to the CROWN Coalition (which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), Black women are 1.5 times more likely to be sent home from the workplace because of their hair. Black women are also 80% more likely than white women to agree with the statement, “I have to change my hair from its natural state to fit in at the office.”
There is also discrimination within the beauty industry as many stylists and salons are not properly trained on how to cut, color, and style natural hair.
Creating an inclusive space has always been important to us here at Garnish (see our All Colors Campaign for more info), which is why we feel it is of vital importance to support the CROWN Act and eliminate discrimination against natural hairstyles.
We have seen through the art of hair extensions how wearing your hair the way YOU desire can be life changing. Every person should be allowed, encouraged, and SAFE to wear their hair exactly how they want. At Garnish we believe that every woman should be able to have the hair that makes her feel most like the amazing woman that she is. That’s why we support the passing of The CROWN Act in every state.
