Confidence with Covid

a word from Candice Motley

Let’s be real—this time has been crazy for all of us, and most days it feels like we can barely stay sane no less keep ourselves feeling good. That’s why I wanted to break down the five steps I’ve taken since all of this began to stay sane and maintain my confidence.

Confidence with Covid

1. SELF-CARE. It sounds so cliché, but I knew if I didn’t take care of myself, I wasn’t going to be able to accomplish anything else. The two biggest self-care things I did were exercise and journaling. I made sure I moved my body everyday. Of course, I’m not perfect and there were some days I didn’t do anything, but overall throughout the entire shutdown and ever since, I’ve made sure to keep taking care of my mental space and my physical self.

2. SOLUTIONS. I’ve made a point to give myself space to organize my thoughts and try to come up with solutions to any and all challenges that have shown up. Solutions make me feel powerful. I know when something’s not working and I may get frustrated, but I’ve also been on a growth journey over the past few years, so what was working for me a year ago or a few years ago isn’t working now. Not because it never worked, but because I’ve grown out of it. If I have to come up with more solutions for something that just means I’m probably doing pretty damn good because the systems and processes that I have in place don’t necessarily work anymore. Stay focused on the solutions instead of just dwelling on the problems.

Confidence with Covid

Confidence with Covid

3. VULNERABILITY. Throughout the past 6 months, I’ve tried to stay vulnerable and just let everyone know where I’m at. This includes my family, my friends, and my team. I don’t have all the answers right now—none of us do. I’m struggling just like everyone else. I love Brené Brown and her work on the power of vulnerability. I’ve really tried to lean into that over the past few years and especially during this time. I do this by sharing openly and honestly about challenges, mistakes, and the learning process as we all navigate shit we’ve never done before.

4. STOP EXPECTING PERFECTION. I’ve had to really kill the perfectionist in me since this whole thing began. Most of us have never homeschooled while running businesses while continuing to pivot trying to stay relevant while all of the other life things are still happening. Keeping your business afloat and your kids out of trouble and yourself sane is not an easy feat. It’s taken a lot of conversations with myself and a lot of giving myself grace. Grace has been a very powerful word for me over the past couple of months.

Confidence with Covid

5. PEOPLE. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by the absolute best people… my entire team is a joy to be around, my right hand woman, Sahar, is my ride or die, I couldn’t have made it without my lead stylist, Niko, and my studio manager, Jen, has helped me pick up all the pieces despite being new to her role. I have support from my mom and family, and great friends who check in and support me. And this isn’t just by chance, it’s all because of a boundary that I put in place that I’ve been actively working on, ensuring the people in my space and life bring me peace.

You don’t know how important your people are until you don’t have anything else and you have to lean on those people. If those people don’t have the best intentions for you, they’re not the right people. My Covid experience would have been completely different if I didn’t have these same people around me.

This is a challenging time for everyone, and maintaining a sense of normalcy can feel difficult if not damn near impossible. This has been my survival guide to staying resilient throughout this process and I hope it helps you feel a little more at peace and with a renewed sense of confidence as you navigate this new world.

We wanted to bring you up to date on what’s happening in our studio because we have a couple of super exciting announcements!

First up, April is expecting! We are so excited for her! We’ve affectionately nicknamed her baby Toodles.
She is also in the process of transitioning to a full-time assistant role. She decided to jump in with both feet and has let go of her existing clientele in the pursuit of extension goodness. Hair extensions are something she’s been interested in for years and we’re thrilled to have her join the training to become a Garnish extension specialist. We are really looking forward to seeing her grow in more than one way.

Next up… as of this week, Jen is going to be our studio project manager! You may have seen Jen around the studio putting away hair, doing inventory things, and being all around cute, savvy, and sassy. Over the past couple of months we’ve been in communication about evolving her role and are thrilled that she will be joining us full-time. Jen has several years of management experience in the restaurant industry and will be taking care of all of the things that we do inside of the studio.

From the outside looking in, it may not be obvious how much detail and work goes into the running of an extension studio. We have a whole inventory process in effect to keep everything organized so you always know your hair is going to be here for your appointment. It needs to be ordered, catalogued, prepped, filed, and catalogued. We run our studio very much like a medical spa, so each client has a file that connects them to all of their information. We track the hair they’ve had in the past, any quote that has been written, the length, density, texture, brand, and weft count of every single guest… and that’s definitely an undertaking. As we’ve continued to grow, that position that was once taken up by the assistants in their spare time has needed to evolve as the assistants don’t really have spare time anymore!

Jen came in with flying colors at the end of the year and has just been so amazing in this position that we’ve grown this position into not just inventory but managing all of the products, projects, and educational formats that we have inside of our studio. It’s amazing to have someone to cross all the t’s and dot all of the i’s. Jen’s attention to detail and all around good vibes made her a shoe-in for this position. We are so happy to have her as a full-time member of our team!

Other than that, things are getting back to normal… as normal as normal can be.

We just wanted to say thank you to everyone for coming in and helping us reinvent our new normal and giving us all an opportunity to jump back into our passion. After two months away we were really missing what we were doing for a living, transforming hair, and talking to everyone.

So we wanted to send out a huge thank you for your continued support that allows us to do what we do. As far as updates in the future, we know that things are constantly changing and can feel very uncertain right now, but as always you can expect our communication streams to be wide open. We can’t wait to finish out the rest of the summer and hopefully see everything get back to even more normal. We just wanted to keep everyone up to date on what was going on inside of our studio and our space!

To keep up with us on a day to day basis, make sure you’re following us on social!

All Black Lives Matter - Raleigh Durham BLM

Garnish’s foundation, upon which everything else has been built, has always been our values. Diversity and inclusion top that list, and from day one we have strived to create a safe and comfortable space for anyone who walked in our doors.

In 2017, we wrote out these values in a statement we called, “The All Colors Campaign.” The original statement read,

“Our studio has been built on the values of diversity and inclusion, and through this campaign we hope to share the message that we welcome everyone to Garnish. No matter your race or religion, gender identity or politics, whether you were born here or immigrated to America from somewhere else in the world, we welcome the opportunity to become your salon—a place where you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful.”

This statement is something we live out every day. It’s a part of our hiring practice, it’s a part of our team, it’s who we are. Our team has always been made up of a diverse group of humans who have come together over a love of hair and passion for changing lives. Hair is an incredibly personal thing for many women, and it’s our goal to provide a safe and comfortable space for our guests to bring us their most sensitive hair concerns.

Whether it be hair loss or thinning, having been told they couldn’t wear extensions due to their hair texture, or just not feeling at home in a salon. We know firsthand that the salon industry is not always inclusive for different hair types and textures. It’s one of the reasons why we’ve made it a point to work with ALL textures of hair extensions. We believe everyone deserves to have the hair of their dreams.

In light of recent events, we wanted to revisit our All Colors Campaign to ensure that not only do we discuss diversity, but we boldy state that Garnish believes All Black Lives more than Matter.

Our studio has always believed and practiced this, but we also believe it’s important to speak up for our values. Every voice makes a difference, and we are adding our voice to this very important message.

Here at Garnish, you are accepted. You are seen. You are worthy. And you belong. Exactly as you are, no matter what.

We welcome the opportunity to serve you🌿

Garnish Update

We’re officially back and could not be more excited!

Not only did we survive the quarantine, we did so with our entire team intact. Over the past several weeks we have been prepping to reopen—acquiring all the new safety gear, setting up the salon to ensure proper distancing, and thinking through the entire experience to make sure it still felt like Garnish. With so much new we definitely had some first day back jitters, but we’re happy to say that the whole week has gone smoothly and the jitters have subsided.

You’ve heard us talk about the Garnish Experience before. We’re super proud of the experience we’ve cultivated inside our studio. When we first learned all the new safety protocols and everything that would need to change we were worried that the “feels” might not be the same.

Our goals are to make people look beautiful AND feel good, and if they felt weird coming into our space or awkward because of the new measures it would take away from the experience we’re always trying to deliver. After a week of being open we can safely say that while it does feel different, it doesn’t feel bad. It just feels like a safer new norm that reflects where we’re at right now.

We took a lot of precautions, but we also took a lot of time to put some things together to ensure the space still felt good. For example, it’s amazing to still be able to offer someone a coffee in the morning. Instead of it being served in a ceramic mug, it’s now in a to go cup with a lid and straw.

And while they may be limited to sipping their beverage during processing time when the stylist has stepped away (due to the mask being removed), it still allows us to offer the same feeling to our guests. The Garnish Experience is a look; it’s a mood; it’s a vibe; it’s a feeling. We made sure to do everything we could to keep all of that.

Throughout this entire process all of our guests have been super supportive so we want to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone—for checking on us, for sticking with us, and even for showing up wearing your masks ready to embrace this new normal. We know it feels a little different, but if everyone does their part all of us small businesses will be able to stay open, and we appreciate you helping us keep everyone safe. We are so excited to open up our doors and get everyone’s rows back where they belong!

We wanted to leave you with one last thought. Our first day back kicked off the same way all of our Tuesdays do—with our gratitude session. This week we decided to focus on what feelings we want to attach ourselves to for this week.  It was our way of choosing a focus and setting our intention for our first week back serving our guests and working together. This helped us all so much throughout the week and we highly recommend the practice.

Garnish Reopening Playbook

The day we have all been waiting for has finally arrived!

Next Tuesday, May 26th, we will be reopening. We have been working hard behind the scenes to prepare the salon to ensure we are able to meet all of the new safety protocols, standards and set things up to run as smoothly as possible.

We know SO many of you are anxiously awaiting your appointment and we can’t wait to see you ALL as soon as we possibly can. Due to occupancy and distancing requirements, we won’t be able to get everyone in in the first week, but we hope you all will be patient and understanding with us as we work to reschedule 8 weeks worth of appointments 😫

We want to assure you that we will be following both the CDC, state, and NC State Cosmetic Board’s recommendations for safety measures within our space. Our team will be going through a dress rehearsal this weekend to guarantee our opening is as safe and smooth as possible.

1. Our staff’s health will be closely monitored and their temperatures will be checked every day. Our entire team will also be wearing masks, but please know we’re smiling underneath it all!

2. Guests will also be required to wear a mask in the studio at all times. If you do not have one, Garnish will gladly provide one for you🌿

3. When you arrive for your appointment, please remain in our “mobile waiting area” (your car.) Text us at (919)793-4008 when you arrive. Our front desk team will let you know when to come in. This is to adhere to our occupancy requirements along with to ensure the prior client has left and the santizing process has been completed before you enter our space.

4. Our front desk team will greet you at the door and take your temperature with a contactless thermometer. If you have an elevated temperature we will ask you to reschedule 14 days out.

5. We will then have you visit our santitation station. We ask that you leave your purse or bag in your car and only bring necessities into the salon.

6. Absolutely no additional people will be allowed in the salon including children, spouses, and friends.

7. We ask that you do not touch any retail or the beverage station. Our stylists or front desk team will be happy to provide you with a beverage or set aside the products that you need.

8. Our stylists will be using hand sanitizer throughout your visit, every tool will be sanitized, and we have added a UV sanitation light for additional disinfecting. We have also acquired a hospital-grade disinfectant called Rejuvenate, which is a non-irritant, EPA registered disinfectant that is proven to kill Covid-19.

9. The studio will be having plexiglass installed at the front desk and in between the shampoo bowls for added safety.

10. At checkout we ask that you either pay with a card on file or choose a touchless checkout option such as apple pay. We also ask that you pre-schedule your next appointment at that time.

11. Finally, due to increased PPE requirements for team and all guests along with the extra sanitation times, the studio will have a $25 Covid House fee applied to every appointment . This service fee covers the additional protective measures we have taken, hospital grade disinfectant and sanitizing required, along with the additional time we will need to set aside between appointments to ensure everything is properly cleaned.

We take pride in going above and beyond to provide a luxurious, laid back, but extremely safe and sanitized environment for you to receive your service. Thank you in advance for understanding the need to adjust as we navigate through this time

We are taking every opportunity to be as safe as we possibly can and safety will remain our top priority during this time. We ask that everyone gives us grace as we reschedule several weeks worth of appointments, and adjust to working under our new guidelines.

We are sooooo ready to get back to work doing what we love and serving our guests in true Garnish Style.

Covid 19 has forced us to pivot and adjust our business to uphold the integrity of our industry during this time, but please know that The Garnish Experience that you have come to expect will remain the same

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at

Thank you ladies so much for your support!

Candice and the Garnish Team

Extension Virtual Consultation

We’re getting closer!

While we’re still awaiting the exact reopening date, we’re getting really excited as we prep for what feels more like a grand reopening event. To all of our existing clients who were scheduled during the last two months, we will be prioritizing rescheduling all of your appointments as best we can. And to anyone who is not yet a client who may be interested in getting started on your extensions journey, we wanted to take a moment to shine some light on our virtual consultations.

We’ve found that a lot of you still have questions about hair extensions and how you can get started on the process as soon as possible. Instead of having to wait until we reopened to even have a consultation, we decided to create a virtual consultation option.

Our studio phone is actually a cell phone which makes it really easy to communicate with our guests. It allows us to text, which we find to be even better than voicemail, and more importantly, it allows us to FaceTime for our virtual consults. While FaceTime doesn’t allow you the chance to come into our studio and have the full Garnish experience, it does allow us to provide all of the information you might need and answer any questions you might have.

The process still begins with the application found here.

The application gives us some much needed information and also allows you to upload a current photo of where your hair is at and an inspiration photo for where you’d like it to be. Once we determine you will be a good candidate, we will reach out to schedule your virtual consultation. Appointments are currently offered on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The consultation cost is $50, which is redeemed off the cost of the extensions if you choose to move forward. The fee covers the virtual consult, all information personalized to you, and a custom quote (sent by email or text following the consultation).

While we will be prioritzing our current guests’ appointments as they had to be cancelled due to the state-mandated shutdown, the first new guest appointments we will be scheduling will be anyone who places a deposit for their extensions while the studio is closed. We will be scheduling these appointments sometime around early July and there will be limited availability. This is why we’re so excited to be able to offer virtual consultations and take advantage of this time we have to get you closer to your hair goals.

Creating amazing extension transformations is our passion and it’s been heartbreaking to not be able to provide that over the last couple of months. We want to do our absolute best to get you started on your hair extensions journey as soon as we possibly can.

We can’t wait to meet you soon!

Garnish Quarantine Kits + Survival Kits + Color Kits

With a few more weeks left in quarantine and the fact that as much as we wish we could, not everyone will be able to have an appointment in the first week or two of being open, we know how important it is that your hair is still being taken care of.

If you haven’t already checked out our Survival Kits, we want to shine some light on them for you so you know all the tools that are available to you to help make it through the final weeks before we are able to have you back in our chairs.

First up is our customized Color Kits.

Roots showing can be a big deal, which is why we worked quickly to create a take-home version of our professional color. The kit includes a personalized touch up root color (the color and the developer), 1 vile of Virtue Colorkick (which turns your hair color into a color treatment; just mix directly into the color), and your choice of: bowl and brush or applicator bottle. It also includes a pair of gloves.

We package it up into a vacuum sealed bag for no mess shipping and send it out once a week on Fridays. We also offer a video walk through or FaceTime phone call when you receive your kit to help you with the actual application process. It’s not ideal to have to color your own roots at home, but it was important to us to provide you with the ability to do so if needed, in a way that wouldn’t damage your hair or color.

In addition to our Color Kits, we also hand picked our must have Oribe products to make sure your extensions make it through quarantine. Taking care of your extensions during this time is key to protecting your investment. We believe that focusing on maintaining a sense of normalcy will not only help inside of your hair routine, but might bring a level of peace. We created four different Survival Kits to meet your various hair needs.

There’s a Signature Kit: Signature Shampoo (travel size), Signature Moisture Masque, Power Drops Hydration Anti-pollution Booster, Glaze for Beautiful Color, Gold Lust Oil, an Invisibobble pack, and a Garnish Signature Tee.

There’s a Gold Lust Kit: Gold Lust Shampoo (travel size), Gold Lust Transformative Masque, Power Drops Damage and Repair Booster, Glaze for Beatiful Color, Gold Lust Oil, an Invisibobble pack, and a Garnish Signature Tee.

There’s a Curly Kit: Moisture & Control Shampoo (travel size), Deep Treatment Masque, Power Drops Hydration Anti-pollution Booster, Glaze for Beautiful Color, Gold Lust Oil, an Invisibobble pack, and a Garnish Signature Tee.

There’s a Beautiful Color Kit: Beautiful Color Shampoo (travel size), Beautiful Color Masque, Power Drops Color Preservation, Glaze for Beautiful Color, Gold Lust Oil, an Invisibobble pack, and a Garnish Signature Tee.

These combinations of products are designed to keep your hair and extensions in tip top shape while they are out of the studio and not receiving treatment for longer than usual. You can check out all of this in our shop, and as always, if you have any questions about what’s best for you, please feel free to reach out.

On behalf of Garnish, please enjoy and soak up the Garnish goodness from the comfort of your own home. We can’t wait to see you soon! Don’t forget your Garnish gift cards!

NBR Hair Extensions

What happens when your Plan B gets completely axed?

You get up and keep going. With the recent extension of the stay at home order along with the news that we may not even be in phase one of reopening, all of our current preparations and plans came to a sudden halt.

Plan A was to never close, work through everything as best we can, make house calls as we were able, and keep servicing our guests. The stay at home order led us to Plan B, which was to take the next month, get all of our ducks in a row, make content videos, and make sure everyone knows what to do for the next 5 weeks or so. We thought, “It’s okay… it’ll be like an extended vacation.”

Anddd now we’re going into month two. We have to be real with you. When we heard about the extension our immediate feelings were frustration and anxiety surrounding the lack of control we have for something that has a direct correlation with our livelihoods, the business’s livelihood, and the way people are able to experience our services.

It’s more than disheartening, and it’s beyond scary. It’s life altering and it’s jarring. We really had our hopes up for beginning of May and we were pretty crushed to find out it would be at least another month before we could return to work.

So Plan C. Right now, we’re trying to gather our thoughts, make sure they’re productive, and make sure that we keep our team and controllables in working order. If having a positive mindset starts to go awry… we have to snap back into reality in order to keep moving forward.

The past several weeks have been about taking care of everyone virtually as best we can. Now, the focus has shifted to rescheduling, so we’re working on detailed plans for what everything will look like when we open back up. We’re also looking into how can we help those around us, what can we do to push forward through this time, and how we can still service our guests virtually.

We’re creating our official “plan of attack,” which is different than just a plan. Just a plan got us through the first month. For month two we have to get a little grittier and put things together so that our business can continue to run. Even though we’re not open servicing our guests, there’s still things that need to be taken care of that can’t be deferred. People are still placing deposits, hair still needs to be ordered, inventory needs to be tracked, freelancers are pouring into the business to provide content… it all needs to continue.

Instead of fingers crossed, they are now pointing forward getting ready to say—onward, let’s go! Let’s move through this in the most forceful, powerful, productive way we can while still maintaining integrity.

We want to make sure we can hit the ground running and do what we need to do when it’s finally time to reopen. If you have any questions or need hair extensions assistance during this time, please feel free to reach out! We’re here for you.

Hair Extension Quarantine Thumbnail

Hello Garnish Guests,

After discussing everything with our team, and checking into local government regulations along with the state board of cosmetology, we are NOT able to offer house calls at this time.

We have just released the quarantine survival guide video for tips and tricks to get through this tricky time as your hair extensions are growing out past your scheduled maintenance.

However, we know that with a five week mandatory shut down, that some of you will not be able to safely push through without removing the extensions.

It breaks our heart to have to write this, but we will be working on a “safe removal of your extensions” video to send out for those that will not be able to make it SAFELY to their next appointment.

This video should be ready within the 5 days to walk you through safely removing your extensions.

Also, we have decided to pause on rescheduling everyone for the time being until we get more information. We would hate to reschedule everyone, only to find it necessary to reach back out if the mandate is lifted earlier, or if it is pushed out. Especially with thousands of guests, this could be a huge undertaking.

As soon as we are able to open up our doors, Garnish is committed to having extended hours to make sure that all of our guests are able to fit back in in a timely manner.

Please stay connected with us here via email, and also on our social media pages for the most up-to-date and current information as we weather the storm with you ladies.

Our commitment to you is to make sure that we are able to provide the same Garnish Experience through this time of uncertainty.

Thank you for your continued support through this time, it means the world to us!

The Garnish Team

PS: Our quarantine kits will be ready for purchase by the END OF THE WEEK.

We will have 2 different kits available

A root touch up kit with the option of adding a glaze or toner to take care of your touch up in the comfort of your own home. Complete with all tools necessary to perform the service safely with video guidance.

Survival Kit
Hand selected products from our Oribe line, specific to your hair’s needs to help your extensions make it through the quarantine.

Taking care of your extensions during this time is key to protect your investment. We believe that focusing on maintaining a sense of normalcy will not only help inside of your hair routine but might bring a level of peace.

On behalf of garnish please enjoy and soak up the garnish goodness from the comfort of your own home💚

Garnish Hair Extension Education

It’s behind the scenes time!

This time we’re taking you with us through the experience of our Team Photoshoot day. Once a year we make a point to take a day, come together as a team, and take some dope photos for our website.

We update our headshots, take team photos, and gather content to be used for our website and social media. This has become a tradition inside of Garnish and we have the best time every time we get together. It’s silly, it’s genuine, it’s organic, and we’re just really excited that this is something that we get to do as part of our job inside of the beauty industry.

Something we’re super proud of at Garnish is the culture we have created. We put a lot of thought and energy into how we want the vibe of the studio to feel. It’s part of why we share so much on social media.

We feel like people should see the real us. What we do, how we do it, why we do it and the type of dynamic that they’re going to be walking into as a guest. Our photoshoot captures the essence of Garnish and we hope you can feel the good energy every time you see one of our photos.

Check out our behind the scenes video to experience the fun!
