Spoiler Alert!

You may remember that last month we announced our upcoming YouTube Channel. It is now fully underway and our first videos will be launching in the next few weeks, so we wanted to take a moment to give you a more in-depth look at what content you can expect to see coming from our channel. There will be two separate series of videos debuting on our channel that address two completely different aspects of our business.
The first will be a series called, “Garnish Your Growth.”

These will be 10-15 minute long videos featuring a conversation between Candice and Niko encompassing a variety of topics related to both personal and business growth. Within these videos you can expect honesty, humor, and vulnerability as they speak with transparency about personal challenges along with difficulties that Garnish has encountered along our journey to becoming an extension-exclusive salon. These videos will be accessible to everyone, meaning you don’t need to be in the beauty industry to find them completely relatable.

The second series will be a tutorial-based collection. As a visual learner herself, Candice wanted to create a visual way to communicate how to make life with extensions a little smoother. We know that there are tons of hair tutorials on YouTube, which is why we are doing things a little differently. All of our videos will be catered directly to our extension guests and women who wear hair extensions. They will showcase what can show up for you when wearing hair extensions, particularly hand tied hair extensions. Hair extensions require everything from styling to shampooing to wearing up to be done a little differently than normal, so we wanted to be able to communicate these differences in a visual, easy to learn from way.

Our tutorials will be debuting twice per month, and we really want to ensure that we are creating content that best services you, our guests. We would love to hear from you about what topics you would like to see, and what you could use some help with when it comes to wearing hair extensions. As we create videos that address different topics, we hope to make the learning curve of hair extensions, particularly more intricate ones such as Crown Extensions, a little less steep. We truly hope for our YouTube channel to become an interactive space for you to communicate with us regarding how we can best serve you and your extensions experience.

In the meantime, make sure you are following us on social media and subscribed to our newsletter to ensure you get the most up-to-date information regarding the launch of our channel and the very first videos! If you haven’t already checked it out, we also invite you to watch our studio update where Candice and Niko dive deep into the behind-the-scenes of our transition over the past year. We look forward to hearing from you with all of your ideas, and creating amazing customized content just for you!

Tis the season for Rebirth & Renewal

As you probably know, last year Garnish began a huge transition, moving into completely specializing in our niche of hair extensions. With this transition came a rebrand of sorts. Many aspects remained the same—our commitment to the unparalleled Garnish Experience, our passion for education, and our creation of gorgeous hair transformations. Our new specialty, however, meant that some of our content had become a little bit outdated.

We have been working tirelessly since the end of last year to revamp our social media and website in order to better reflect our business and better serve you, our guests. It is with those goals in mind that we completely recreated the Garnish website.

The combined creative efforts of our Graphic Designer, Jenell, of Neon Gumbo Studio and our Content Creator, Kassy, of Quirks Creative, our new site brings you a ton of new content, transparency for our process, and plenty of gorgeous hair visuals. We have fully outlined our extensions process, added FAQs, and provided information for each of our extension methods. All of this brings you more knowledge and a better understanding of hair extensions and our studio.

We invite you to check out our new site and really explore.

In addition to the extension information, we have updated team bios, a look at the Garnish Academy, and a brand new gallery gracing the front page. As always we thank you for supporting us through this transition and being a part of the Garnish family.

Introducing Quirks Creative

If you’ve been into the studio you probably know our Studio Manager, Kassy. What you may not know is that she has been growing her side hustle into a business for the last two years all while managing the salon full-time. Beginning in the new year Kassy’s role at Garnish will be shifting as her business becomes her full-time career. I wanted to take a moment to share a little bit about her journey with us here at Garnish before introducing her new role.

Quirks Creative

You all know I’m a vision person. I am all about a Vision Statement. And I truly believe Kassy was brought to Garnish through my vision statement for my studio manager. She embodies everything I was looking for in a manager—and then some.

In addition to all of the guest service and management qualities I was seeking, I knew I wanted this person to bring an artistic and creative vibe to the role. Hence why I consider her heaven sent via my vision.

Kassy’s business had just recently launched prior to her joining the team, but it was through the yearly Garnish Vision and Goals exercise that each of my team members completes, that her business found direction.

Quirks Creative

Just about a year and a half ago we sat down to discuss her goals and what it would look like for her to exclusively focus on the aspects of her job that she’s most passionate about—the ones that aligned with her business.

We’ve been steadily moving towards that goal and I am thrilled to be able to stand behind one of our creatives as she takes this next step in her career.

Quirks Creative

I am proud to introduce our new freelance partner, Quirks Creative, who will be continuing to grace our chalkboards with art, managing our social media, updating website content, and contributing to the Garnish blog. Click here to visit her website, or follow along with her social media (Instagram/Facebook).

Fun Fact: We Love Hair Extensions

No seriously, we really LOVE hair extensions. We love being able to help women find solutions for their hair needs whether that’s added length, more volume for the length they already have, or filling in skinny ends that won’t grow.

Hair Extensions can create such a beautiful transformation, and provide an amazing solution for so many hair needs. There are, however, some hair concerns that traditional extensions cannot solve. Over the past decade that Candice has been applying hair extensions she has seen a wide variety of women’s hair needs, and has made it her mission to learn all she can to assist as many women as possible. While we love a beautiful set of extensions, what means the most is being able to actually provide solutions for women who don’t know where else to turn.

This has led us to the commitment to level up the services that we offer here at Garnish. We’re doing this in a couple of different ways. If you’ve never heard of Crown Hair Extensions before, prepare to be amazed.

Crown Hair Extensions are a method of extension that can be applied to areas of hair loss and excessive thinning in ways that traditional extensions cannot. They provide coverage that blends perfectly into the natural hair, including a natural looking part. For women experiencing hair loss, bald spots, and “see-through” hair, Crown Extensions can provide a beautiful solution.

Because Candice believes in not just finding a cosmetic solution to hair needs, but in actually being able to help women solve the underlying issue—IF medically possible—she has also begun training in Trichology.

Trichology comes to Garnish Hair Studio + Extension Bar

Candice along with Donyata, attended a training event in Florida recently, and will continue to partake in ongoing training to become Trichology Specialists. Trichology is the study of hair loss and scalp conditions, and will allow Candice and Donyata to look at your scalp, evaluate its health and what treatments might help, along with determining if you may be a good fit for hair regrowth laser technology.

The technology of the Trichology evaluations will not only help women seeking assistance with hair concerns related to extensions, but also for women with scalp issues such as itching, dandruff, excessive oil production, and more.

We will be able to offer treatments tailored to each person’s needs, increasing their scalp health—which in turn leads to healthier hair. At Garnish we are constantly seeking ways to go above and beyond your average salon in what we can offer for your hair needs and goals. Trichology will allow us to help each person who sits in our chairs in an even more in depth way.

If you have any questions about Trichology, and what that will bring to Garnish, please feel free to reach out and chat with us about it. We would love to talk to you about how we can help your hair—and YOU—feel amazing.

Welcome to the Garnish 2017 TOP FIVE.

The end of the year is inevitably a time of reflection, and this year we wanted to share with you all what YOUR top 5 favorite blog posts of the year were.

Garnish presents…Pink Gloves Spotlight: Today, we honor Lisa

We LOVE that this was your favorite post of the year, because we totally understand—Lisa is one of our favorites, too. In this blog post Lisa shared with us her personal journey with Candice and extensions after having lost her hair through chemotherapy for breast cancer. Lisa allowed us to document her process from her very first color last January all the way through to her crown extension application in August. It was so incredibly special to Candice and all of us to be a part of Lisa’s journey, and we are so happy that you all enjoyed sharing in the journey through this post. If you haven’t yet had a chance to read all about Lisa’s story and extension process with Candice, you can do so here.

A Special Thank You from Garnish Hair Studio Owner, Candice Motley

This just gives us one more opportunity to thank YOU ALL for your support. Considering that our message thanking you was one of your favorites just makes us feel all the more warm fuzzies. We are constantly blown away by the support and encouragement you all provide for us by choosing Garnish as your hair home. Candice wrote this thank you message to express her gratitude for all of you who have followed her throughout the years, those of you who have given us your flexibility with studio changes, and all of you who continue choosing us, and who share your experience with your friends and family, bringing them to us as well. Your presence is a gift, and we are thankful for it. If you’d like to read Candice’s message, you can do so here.

Garnish bids Fare Thee Well to Ray

As beloved as Ray was to all of you, it’s no surprise that his farewell blog post ranked third on the top five posts of the year. It’s never easy to lose a team member who has been there from the beginning, who had such an integral part in the formation of the business, and we definitely felt Ray’s loss. We definitely miss his humor lighting up the studio, but are so thankful for the incredible impact he had in the five years he was with Candice, and on Garnish’s first three years in business. If you would like to read Ray’s farewell post, please visit here.

Garnish class is now in session: Hair Psychology 101

In this blog post we talked all about how acquiring the hair of your dreams can make you feel more self-confident and help you love what you see in the mirror. This message really seemed to resonate with a lot of you, and we GET IT. We are all about helping you truly love your look through your hair because we feel the impact that great hair can have on a person. To read more about the effect beautiful hair can have on how you feel, check out our Hair Psychology 101 blog post here.

Niko of Garnish Hair Studio loves Dirty Hair

This one went way back to the beginning of the year, but you all LOVED Niko’s Hair tip about joining the Dirty Hair Club. In this blog post Niko shared all the reasons why she loves to skip a shampoo and the benefits it can have on your hair. To check out what she had to say, visit her blog post here.

Thank you all for spending the year with us reading our informational articles, product reviews, hair tips, and salon updates. We appreciate all of your continued support, and look forward to sharing even more amazing hair things with you all next year!

Pretty soon the entire world will turn pink, and everyone will be talking about Breast Cancer Awareness. As important as simple awareness may be, the reason October was designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month is so much more than just for brands everywhere to explode with pink merchandise. It’s about more than just “Saving the Tatas.”

It’s about the women who have fought the disease and won, and it’s about the women who have fought the disease and lost. It’s about our mothers, sisters, friends, neighbors, and loved ones—the actual humans experiencing the daily struggle of living with and defeating breast cancer, and the beautiful women who are no longer with us because of this disease.

Awareness is not just about knowing that the disease exists, it’s about understanding the signs and symptoms, the importance of regular screenings, and how you can support someone you know affected by Breast Cancer.

Each year, Garnish supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month through donations. This year we are proud to be sponsoring a survivor who is part of our family, Annette Hammond, Jenell Gilyard, our Graphic Designer’s Aunt. Aunt Annette created a non-profit called Blanketing Families, Inc., and we are so happy we will be able to support Aunt Annette and Blanketing Families, Inc. Blanketing Families Inc. came to be because of a very special blanket gifted to Annette during her chemo therapy. She realized how close she felt to family and friends who couldn’t be there through the sentiment of the custom blanket she received. When she beat Breast Cancer and AML, she knew she had to provide that same feeling of warmth and love to others, so she started Blanketing Families, Inc.

For each $25 donation, we give you a free pink hair extension. Our hope is for our extensions to provide a conversation starter that leads more women to understanding the importance of early detection, along with providing an avenue to raise monetary support for research.

Because we believe that awareness really means knowledge, we will be sharing Breast Cancer Awareness facts on our Instagram and Facebook throughout the month of October. We invite our friends to share these images as well—the spread of information is the real reason behind the spread of pink, after all, isn’t it?

We also invite you into the studio, whether you are a current guest or not, to receive your pink hair extension in exchange for your donation to Blanketing Families Inc.

We would love to team up with other women in our mission to share knowledge and support for those fighting and those who have fought.

Garnish: An All Colors Company

Hair Extension Specialist - Roadblocks: There's always another way

Three years full of growth, laughter, a multitude of hair cuts and colors, ALL of the extensions, and pretty much transforming the hair of Raleigh—it’s Garnish Hair Studio & Extension Bar’s Third Anniversary! In honor of this special day we wanted to share with you a little bit about the history of Garnish, and what’s made us who we are today.

You may or may not know that the birth of Garnish starts much farther back than when we opened our doors three years ago. In order to give you the history of Garnish, we need to start with a little history on owner Candice Motley. Let’s go back to the beginning for a moment. Straight from highschool, Candice entered cosmetology school, and fell in love with personal transformations.

The services that focused most on beautification—transformational colors, drastic cuts, and extensions—drew her in and inspired her. It didn’t take long into her career for Candice to realize there was a magic to transformative services that is brought to life in the shared emotional experience of helping someone achieve their ideal look. Over her career she worked for other business owners, and then in her own space by herself, through the years cultivating a culture of beautiful transformations for her guests.

It took a while, but eventually she found an amazing salon home—even investing in a portion of the salon—only to be told 6 months later that the salon would be closing permanently. The news was devastating, but it opened the door for Garnish to be born.

Candice, along with Ray (if you’re new to Garnish, Ray was Candice’s assistant, and pretty much right hand man) embarked on the journey to open Garnish Studio. Sahar (a long-time client turned Garnish accountant turned CFO), and Jenell, (graphic designer and creator of this site) were also a part of the journey from the very beginning.

It took one year for the space to be completely customized into the beautiful studio that you see today. Before the doors even opened, the team began to come together as first Tish, and then Christine, joined Candice as the OG Garnish Squad.

In the early days, there were only four stations, and the three stylists and Ray were the only team members in studio. Less than six months later, Andrayah joined the team and shortly thereafter, Donyata arrived. Niko joined the team around a year in, creating the need for a fifth station to be added to the studio design. Over the next couple of years the studio grew exponentially as Candice’s vision and passion for transformational services spread to her team and developed into a collaborative studio mindset.

Two years later and the Garnish team has expanded to include a new guest services manager, Kassy, receptionist, Stephanie, and will be adding a studio assistant, Reece, in the next few weeks.

We have expanded our extension services, gaining training and certifications in new methods. We have grown our retail offerings, and brought in new color lines to ensure we are continuously providing the highest standards to our guests. We have a blog that is chocked full of tips, product reviews and information, and other fun articles all about hair. Each of our stylists has dedicated themselves to staying at the forefront of the industry through a commitment to education and training.

More than anything, we have forged connections with our wonderful clients, building relationships based on Candice’s vision for meeting hair needs and transforming lives through hair. The history of Garnish is truly just beginning as we continue to grow as a team, and as a part of our community.

We wanted to close out this history of Garnish by saying thank you to all of you who have supported Candice throughout the years before Garnish, and the entire Garnish team since the birth of the studio three years ago. Candice’s belief in her vision, and the team’s support of that goal provided the space, but it was your belief in and appreciation for the “Garnish Experience” that transformed the business into what it is today.

We look forward to continuing to serve you with all of your hair needs, and helping you achieve your hair goals and dreams!

As the new school year begins, there’s one group of people gearing up for one of the most important—and challenging—jobs in the world. Our teachers spend day after day educating our children, encouraging them, caring for them, and helping them grow. In appreciation for all of the hard work our teachers put in—not just during the school day, but often in a lot of their “free” time and before classes officially begin, we wanted to offer a special discount for all educators this month.

For the month of August, teachers and educators will receive 10% off of our new product line, R+Co. To help you pick out your new favorite product (we guarantee it will be), we’ve put together a guide for choosing the right products for your hair!

Hair Type: Thin/Fine
In Need Of: Volume

Okay, ladies, let’s talk about the Dallas fam first. Dallas Shampoo is super cool because it has advanced polymers that create body and volume while reducing static. Because those styling agents are built into the shampoo, you can opt to blow out your hair with no additional products.

Dallas Conditioner includes the same type of styling agents that boost body and volume, but it also includes reparative ingredients that nourish the hair and improve elasticity (which is important for plumping effects.) This duo can be combined with a different shampoo or conditioner or used together for maximum effects. The last of the Dallas fam is the Thickening Spray.

First, it smells amazing, but more importantly, it is the best combination of conditioning and moisturizing while also thickening and building volume (aka volume without the frizz!). It also includes thermal protection which makes it a great prep spray before blow drying your hair. Outside the Dallas line, we also love Cactus Texturizing shampoo for fine-haired ladies AND lads.

Teacher Appreciation R+Co

Cactus works best without a conditioner after, which is awesome for those who naturally have silky smooth hair. It adds texture and grip while also strengthening and hydrating the hair, which is all pretty fantastic. Finally, if you ever experience oily scalp, we love both of R+Co’s dry shampoo products for both a boost of volume at the root, added texture to dry hair, and of course the actual dry shampoo benefits. Death Valley is a preventative dry shampoo to be applied to clean, dry hair, and Badlands is the first ever dry shampoo paste that can be added to day two or three hair to revitalize your roots, and absorb oil.

Hair Type: Wavy/Curly
In Need Of: Curl-enhancing, frizz-reduction

No matter what your wave or curl pattern, there are a few things that seem to ALWAYS plague curly girls’ hair. In need of moisture/hydration, frizz probs, and finding a product that jives with your unique wave or curl pattern. Not all curl products work equally well for all curls. R+Co offers a variety of products that each cater to a specific need that textured hair faces.

For shampoo and conditioner, they have both a moisture line and a smoothing line. These can be used by the set, or mix and matched per your hair needs. Our favorite R+Co styling product for curls is Twister Curl Primer. This is a unique product that actually preps your curls to better receive whichever curl product you choose to use next. Used as a stand alone product it reduces frizz and adds shine, but does not offer any hold. Used in conjunction with another product it does all the things curly hair needs—moisturizes, reduces frizz, increases shine, and smoothes the hair cuticle.

This gets your curls in the best possible place to work with whichever curl product you choose. Because R+Co understands that different curls like different types of products, they have a variety of products that can be used on curls or waves. Two mousses—Aircraft for waves OR curls, has a 3 out of 10 hold and enhances the natural pattern and Chiffon with a hold of 4 out of 10 that is fabulous for finer curls.

Two gels—Motorcycle, a gel/wax hybrid that has the hold of a gel with the shine of a wax, and Wall St, your classic strong hold gel. Sail, a soft wave spray, and Rockaway, a beach spray, are both great for those who like a messy, beachy waved look. Basically, whatever your textured hair needs, R+Co has got you covered. Ask your stylist which product might work best for your hair texture!

Hair Type: Thick/Coarse/Damaged
In Need Of: Hydration, Repair, Softening

Despite all of our best intentions for having healthy, un-damaged hair—sometimes it happens. Maybe your hair is naturally prone to breakage, or a previous color experience left your hair in less than admirable condition. Using great products with high quality ingredients can often be a vital aspect to bringing your hair back to a healthy place.

If you have naturally coarse hair, or are in need of some reparation and moisture, Atlantis Shampoo and Conditioner are made just for you. Both products include ingredients that treat scalp health, oil for moisture and smoothness, and a protein for strengthening. The conditioner can also be left on the hair for approximately 10 minutes to be used as a hair mask.

You can also use Palm Springs, a treatment mask that targets scalp health, along with restoring moisture and strengthening the hair. Palm Springs can be used pre-shampoo (applied to dry hair for approximately 10 minutes), as a traditional post-shampoo mask (leave on for 10-60 minutes) or as an extra hydrating co-wash (when you use one product in place of both shampoo and conditioner).

The most important thing for styling coarse and damaged hair is to protect the hair from further damage from heat and tools. Starting with a prep spray (One Prep or Pinstripe Detangler) helps balance the porosity of the hair strands, and seal moisture into the hair. You could also add hydration and softness with a moisture cream like High Dive. This conditions and restores the hair.

Finally, a hair oil can often be your hair bestie when you have dry, damaged hair. Tinsel Smoothing Oil softens, nourishes, and smoothes the hair, along with providing protection against heat and environmental aggressors.

TEACHERS: Thank you for all that you do each and every day for our children and our futures! We hope you will enjoy receiving 10% off of your R+Co purchase throughout the month of August. If you are in need of a product consultation, give us a call and chat with our Guest Services team (Kassy, Stephanie, and Ray) or schedule a 15 minute product consultation with your stylist. Happy Back to School Days!
